Sustainable Living

Clear Sky Meditation Center is committed to promoting the teaching of awakening for current and future generations. In order for this to be possible we have to ensure that both the Center itself and future generations of the teachings will exist. One way to do this is to reduce our environmental impact as much as possible. Clear Sky is already implementing a variety of solutions: some new, some old and some with an exploratory twist.

New Technologies

One of the most exciting new green technologies currently being employed at Clear Sky Meditation Center is also one of the least noticed: the humble light bulb. How can something so prosaic be exciting? As with almost anything in Dharma, once we scratch the surface of the ordinary it turns out to be extraordinary. Lighting is perhaps the easiest way for anyone to make an immediate and almost effortless difference to their power consumption. A 9.5W LED bulb produces light equivalent to a 60W standard incandescent. Making no other changes in behavior, it's possible to reduce our lighting energy expenditure by almost 75%!

Clear Sky has been using high efficiency compact fluorescent lights (CFL) since it was founded, however we have now begun the transition to LED bulbs. LEDs have several advantages even over CFL bulbs: they take no time to "warm up", use even less power (about 5% more efficient than CFL), last longer (up to 20 years and potentially 60 years for the latest technology) and perhaps most importantly they contain no mercury.
